“Humphrey Hippo” written by Sarah Alden, children’s author and speech pathologist, is meant to inspire young children with disabilities to never let their struggle become their identity. All of us have attributes that make us unique and through this journey our main character discovers his. Because this book teaches self-confidence and self-love, it was important to Sarah not to exclude any child including non-verbal and autistic children. Through research we learned that these types of children thrive when exposed to illustrations using strong patterning and texture in literature. The simple, repetitive writing style is clear and descriptive, it was important that the illustration style mirror that idea. To keep kids interested and attracted, each page has simple illustrations filled with hand-designed paste paper and bright colors without any distracting backgrounds.
